Phoenix SOAR connects survivors and loved ones with others who have experienced similar trauma - whether through their own burn injury or as the loved one of a burn survivor. Phoenix SOAR helps survivors and loved ones find comfort through relationships with people who have been where they are and understand their journey. Below you will find detailed instructions for the Peer Supporter course. Please read these instructions carefully.
Before your live Peer Supporter training, complete the training modules (videos) below, read the Phoenix SOAR Peer Supporter manual and complete the following worksheet. Please print the worksheet, complete it, and have it with you during virtual course where we will share our experiences.
You can stop and start the course modules multiple times. We recommend you have your Phoenix SOAR Peer Supporter manual available and take notes, as needed. The curriculum follows the manual for each section.
These modules will help you understand the goals of Phoenix SOAR and your role in the program. You will also learn about trauma response, build communication skills for peer support visits, and identify when you'll need to ask for help.
The modular curriculum is also in your Peer Supporter Manual. You can refer to your manual when you are completing your pre- assessment. To complete your pre-course modules and be admitted into the course, you must take and submit your pre-assessment. This will be sent to you from the PhoenixSoar@Phoenix-Society.org email address.
The pre-course assessment must be completed three days prior, to participate in the live training course. If you are having difficulty with the completion of the modules - please contact the Phoenix Society.
The live course will be taught by two Phoenix SOAR National Instructors. The virtual training will be approximately 4.5 hours in length. There will be two 10-minute breaks midway through the training.

Will be mentioned at the beginning of group.
All feelings are okay and honored- none are shameful, good, bad, etc- Group is a safe and judgement-free environment. We will not rescue, stop, or judge anyone’s feelings.
What is shared in the group stays in the group--this includes telling people’s stories even if you do not share their name.
Everyone deserves a support system. Have a plan for where else you will get support next. Identify a specific person (friend, family member, counselor, spiritual leader, etc.) and a specific plan for how you will connect with them if you are feeling down or distressed.
We will work to facilitate “equal air time” for all participants. To do this, we might ask you to share a shortened version of your story, narrowing down on a specific event or feeling that you’re looking to get support for. We will help guide the conversation to allow everyone to have time to speak.
No “fix it” rule: You will hear others’ perspectives, but we are not here to give one another advice or “should”s.
Respect for spiritual boundaries requires that the group be accepting of and a safe space for diverse religious and spiritual belief systems.
What is shared in this virtual gathering, stays in this virtual gathering. It is not okay to share other people’s stories or details of their life that they might choose to reveal in a support group.
Respecting continued privacy. Do not give out personal information, or invite or solicit individual connections during group.
