Interview with Jeanette Johnson

Written on July 01, 2021

We recently sat down with Jeanette Johnson

to learn more about her experience at Phoenix World Burn Congress (WBC): Engage

PHOENIX: CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS BURN SURVIVOR?

Jeanette: I was in Broken Bow, Oklahoma to celebrate my wife’s birthday.  On that Saturday evening June 6, 2020, we were enjoying the outdoor fire pit. Just embers were burning when I got up out of my chair. Doing so, I twisted my ankle and fell into the pit.

PHOENIX: HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT PHOENIX SOCIETY?

Jeanette: I first learned about Phoenix Society after I was released from the hospital and my burn care clinic.

I saw a Phoenix SOAR brochure in the waiting room but due to COVID-19 there were no in-person Phoenix SOAR visits to the hospital. When I was released, the head nurse shared a packet with me and told me about Phoenix Society virtual opportunities.

PHOENIX: WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE LIKE AT PHOENIX WBC: ENGAGE?

Jeanette: I still struggle with my reality and both Phoenix WBC and Phoenix WBC: Engage has helped me on various levels, especially emotionally and physically. I have also regularly attended Virtual Support Group and those have helped me so much.

PHOENIX: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SESSION AND WHY?

Jeanette: My favorite session was Skin Care After a Burn Injury. I loved hearing about different products that have worked for Kechi

PHOENIX: WHAT WAS THE NUMBER ONE THING YOU TOOK AWAY FROM THE EVENT?

Jeanette: I’m not alone and it doesn’t matter if you are a hidden burn survivor, we all have needs and we all have gone through trauma.
