Support the Society and help empower anyone affected by a burn injury.

Our History

FOUNDED BY ALAN BRESLAU IN 1977

The Society was founded by Alan Breslau, who was extensively burned in the crash of a commercial airliner in 1963. Following a visit to a young boy in a burn center, Alan realized the importance of peer support for those with burn injuries and went on to establish one of the first burn support organizations in the United States.

After many years of working with burn survivors he officially incorporated The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors in 1977.  Society takes its name from the legendary bird that lives 500 years and is consumed by flame, but rises again, reborn from its ashes, more brilliant than before.

Alan Breslau

Alan BreslauFor over 30 years Alan worked tirelessly to expand the burn survivor network from a office in his home in Levittwon Pennsylvania. With modest resources and limited staff he was able to touch thousands of lives. Alan retired in 1998 and the Board of Trustees worked hard to raise the necessary funds to hire a Executive Director with plans to fulfill Alan's dream of serving as a national resource center for burn survivors and those who care for them. Today the Society is a leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to empower anyone affected by a burn injury.
